What is Assassin’s Creed Shadows about?

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is an action role-playing game developed by Ubisoft Quebec, scheduled for release on February 14, 2025. It is the fourteenth major installment in the Assassin’s Creed series and takes place in 16th-century Japan, during the Sengoku period. The game follows the millennia-old conflict between the Assassin Brotherhood, who fight for freedom, and the Templar Order, who seek control. Players experience the story from the perspective of two protagonists: Naoe, a female shinobi, and Yasuke, an African samurai inspired by the real historical figure.

The gameplay introduces dynamic lighting, environmental interactions, and unique features like manipulating shadows and using a grappling hook for parkour. The open world changes with seasons, and missions offer non-linear approaches. Players can recruit a spy network for gathering intelligence and use historically accurate weapons like katanas, shuriken, and the kusarigama. Yasuke’s and Naoe’s combat styles differ, offering diverse gameplay experiences.

Set in feudal Japan, the game explores historical events, including Oda Nobunaga’s rise to power and the influence of Portuguese traders. It also addresses themes of foreign perspectives in Japan through Yasuke’s character, while allowing players to explore various cities and regions.
